Defence
officials warned yesterday that a special forces blitz on Taliban
positions near the city of Kandahar marked the start of "fierce
and bloody" fighting in covert operations aimed at killing
supporters of Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan.
The
opening assault in the ground campaign was launched by more
than 100 US Army Rangers and smaller groups of elite Delta Force
counter-terrorist commandos ferried into battle by night-flying
Black Hawk helicopters and C-130 transport planes.

In
a short, shock attack at the heart of Taliban rule, troops backed
by heavily armed AC-130 gunships stormed out of the darkness
to strike the compound of Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban
leader, and an airfield.
Videoclips
of the operation issued by the Pentagon last night showed troops
parachuting from a C-130 towards one of the targets. The Americans
destroyed a bridge near Omar's home, which was also a command
and control centre. A cache of weapons at the airfield, including
rocket-propelled grenade launchers, machineguns and ammunition,
was blown up.

According to one report yesterday, US military commanders had
planned a similar attack earlier last week on targets close
to Kabul, but scrubbed the mission because of a dust storm.

The
US-led military campaign in Afghanistan has entered its third
week with renewed air strikes near Kabul.
The
armed forces minister, Adam Ingram, said the approach of winter
brought "another complication" to the effort.
Asked
if the coalition planned to achieve its "immediate military
objectives" in Afghanistan over the next month, given the
problems posed by weather and the approach of Ramadan, he said:
"That would be a tremendous achievement and clearly we
are planning to achieve that very objective.
"The
winter brings another complication into it, there's no question
at all about that, and it's why then we have to look at the
probability of it being an extended campaign if we don't achieve
our objectives initially," Ingram told Sky television.
"But we are determined to achieve those objectives as quickly
and as early as possible."
Earlier
today an opposition fighter said US war planes bombarded Taliban
positions just behind the front line.

F18 launch from USS Carl Vinson
There
has been limited US bombing of areas behind Taliban front lines
near Kabul in recent days, but today's bombardment appeared
to be the heaviest and closest to the front line yet.
The
bombing could be the start of a more aggressive American campaign
to help the northern-based alliance fight the ruling Taliban
militia.
Northern
Alliance officials had been asking the United States to bomb
the front line north of Kabul so that they could advance on
the capital.
But
until now, US bombing of front line positions has mostly taken
place around the strategic northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif,
not Kabul, apparently because of reservations about the Northern
Alliance taking over in Afghanistan. ...
